Iványi Gábor

In grainy photos from Budapest

You are the image of God

From a child’s mind,

A face kind and stern

In equal measure,

A long white beard

Tangling the crisp lines

Of a black suit

Or maybe a traditional robe.

Looking again, I see

You are only

A remnant of Babel,

A Hungarian,

Like me and yet

So not alike.

You will never

Read these words

The way I do,

But the voices

Of Heaven

Have many tongues
