Fireworks on the Potomac

star bouquets
fall on lightstrung houseboats
flower rings
decorate neckcraned guests

never old fingers interlock
over the rails
dusk water reveals our faces
a baby shrieks
never opened fists pound the dock

hands tighten
the finale begins
for tonight
we refuse to listen
gunpowder
shots come before the light
