A Missed Funeral

That day I longed to take the trails
of snakes abandoning the path
Instead I climbed beside the lines
of acupunctured cacti pressed
to rocky dirt and blistered sun

I came to some alpaca land
preserved for Andean accord
I searched the wind for a vision
of presence within the absence

But theologian theories clashed
with Hamlet’s worms below the ground
and then I turned to where a snake
descended once to writhe before
accepting life that comes again
