Don’t ask

the morning has a body
bodies have sleep cycles
repetition has a wrist-watch’s worth
of my attention

the source get no mention
the alias gets no alter ego
patterns get an audience
but don’t care for the stage

cages have makers
outlets are deal-breakers
electricity made this fence
and a fair assortment of turn-takers

paper will be shredded
before subtly embedded
in the credit pretenders demand
for their anonymity

artists have cities
they are drawn to
drawings rarely get frames
or accurate amounts of gratitude

don’t ask me
why I keep asking you
to keep looking at me
while I look past you
